Fourier series, boundary value problems for partial differential equations, applications of Legendre polynomials and Bessel functions.
We'll be using the online text, Linear Methods of Applied Mathematics: Orthogonal series, boundary-value problems, and integral operators, by Evans Harrell and Jim Herod. The text is located at the URL "http://www.mathphysics.com/pde/" (without the quotes).
You may also wish to consult the authors' web sites, which contain resources (and old tests):
We will follow the schedule of topics outlined in Professor Herod's
lecture notes, which are saved as Maple worksheets in three sections:
Your course grade will be based upon two in-class tests, a take-home test, four homework assignments, and a comprehensive final exam. Point values will be assigned as follows:
A total score of 522 points or more earns an "A", 464 earns a "B", 406 earns a "C", and 348 earns a "D".
The first and third tests will be in-class tests, and the second test will be a take-home test. The tentative dates are as follows:
In completing the take-home test, you may use your books, your notes, and your computer. You may NOT get assistance from any other person.
While I do my best to grade your work fairly and correctly, I may occasionally make a mistake. If you feel that something has been marked wrong when it is in fact correct, please attach a written explanation with your graded paper for my consideration. Also, check your point totals to verify that I've added your points up correctly. If the total reflected is incorrect, please let me know.
In any event, all re-grades must be completed by the time the next test is submitted.
Drop Day: The last day to withdraw from the course with a grade of "W" is Friday, February 6.
Holiday during quarter: Monday, January 19
Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive. It's TENTATIVELY scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 8:00 - 10:50 a.m.
