Text. Algebra and Trigonometry, Fourth Edition, by Roland E. Larson and Robert P. Hostetler. This course will address chapters 6 8.
Grading.
Course grades will be based upon three tests scores, pop quizzes, and a comprehensive final exam. Your total score will reflect the following weights:
3 tests:
60%
pop quizzes: 20%
final exam:
20%
Course grade will be based upon the percentage of the maximum total points as follows:
A: 90% or more, B: 80% or more, C: 70% or more, D: 60% or more
Tests. Tentative test dates are Tuesday, June 30; Wednesday, July 14; and Monday, July 27. These test dates are subject to change. Any changes in these dates will be announced in class at least two class days in advance and posted to the course web page. It is the responsibility of the student to keep apprised of any such changes.
Please note: Once a student has submitted a test, students arriving late will no longer be permitted to begin that test. In such cases, the late student will receive a zero for that test score. See also the absentee policy below.
Pop quizzes. Due to the pace of the summer quarter this time, students cannot afford to get behind on their course work. For that reason, I will give an undetermined number of pop quizzes. You will be permitted to drop some of your quiz scores. I will announce the number of drops permitted before the last class day; the number of drops will be approximately 1/3 of the total number of quizzes given.
The pop quizzes will be open-book, open-notes quizzes. Often times, they will contain problems assigned as homework on a previous class day.
Pop quizzes will always be given at the beginning of class; they typically will last five minutes. Tardy students will not be given additional time to complete a quiz. Students who miss a quiz will receive a zero for that quiz score.
Course participation. Please be aware that I typically do not curve scores. In the event your grade is close to one of the indicated cutoff values, I may consider class participation (and preparation for class) in determining your final grade.
Final Exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. It is scheduled for Friday, July 31, 8:00 10:00 a.m.
Absentee Policy. No makeup tests will be given. If a student misses a test, the weight of the final will be increased to replace the missing test score (likewise for additional missed tests). For example, if one test is missed , the final will be worth 40% of the grade, instead of 20%. If two tests are missed, the final will be worth 60% of the grade.
If at all possible, please notifiy me in advance of an absence on a test day.
PLEASE NOTE: Students are expected to attend every course meeting. According to the attendance policy published in the Student Handbook, if a student accumulates 10 or more course hours of absence during the quarter, I am authorized to assign the grade of "WF."
Academic Withdrawal. The last day to withdraw from the course with a grade of "W" is Wednesday, July 15. You are responsible for completing the paperwork and submitting it to the Registrars Office no later than that date. If you stop attending class without completing this paperwork, you will receive a grade of "WF" on your transcript.
Students with Disabilities: If you have a documented
disability, as described by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (P.L. 933-112
Section 504) or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and you need
assistance in accessing instructional content or in meeting course requirements,
please contact the Office of Disability Services in the Tower Center as
soon as possible. Their office is located in Woodall Hall, suite 156; they
may be reached by telephone at (706) 568-2330. It is then your responsibility
to contact and meet with the instructor. The Office of Disability Services
can assist with the formulation of appropriate accommodations for your
disability. Course requirements will not be waived, but accommodations
may be made to assist you in meeting the requirements. Technical support
may also be available to meet your specific needs.
